Not So Happy Happy, Joy Joy
If you were raised in the church, you may remember the old song, "I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart ... " (If you're desperate to relive it ... or hear it for the first time ... I found a video and put it down below.)
There's no question that one of the key "fruits" of the Spirit is joy. And if you listen to some televangelists, you'll hear the promises of a long, healthy, prosperous lives of faithful Christians. And they'll quote chapter and verse to back them up.
But then there's the rest of the story ... and for many of us, the shared reality.
Being a Christian in these days and times brings no guarantee for a problem free life. And, if we're brutally honest, being faithful in today's anti-church environment is no picnic either.
Even Jesus chimed in with the "encouraging" word that if you follow Him, persecution and troubles will naturally follow you (Mark 13:13; Matthew 24:9; John 15:18-21). I'm thinking Jesus may have been one of the first proponents of the Truth in Advertising laws.
What are we to make of all of this? If Christianity is a guarantee for difficulties, why do we keep on sharing the "good" news? Is it perhaps because Misery Loves Company?
That's what we'll be talking about in this Sunday's conversation. I hope you'll join me at 9:00 or 10:30.
See you in church!
